October 9, 2024

Former Celtic defender Kolo Toure has opened up about the priceless guidance he received from ex-boss Brendan Rodgers, revealing the key advice that’s shaping his post-playing and coaching journey. Toure, who worked closely with Rodgers at Celtic, credits the managerial insight as a driving force in his development off the pitch.

Kolo Toure made 17 appearances for Celtic during the 2016/17 season, playing a part in the club’s legendary Invincible Treble under Brendan Rodgers. After hanging up his boots, Toure seamlessly transitioned into coaching, joining Rodgers’ staff first at Celtic and then at Leicester City, where they went on to lift the FA Cup together, marking another highlight in their successful partnership.

Kolo Toure’s rising profile in the coaching world earned him the Wigan Athletic managerial role in late 2022, but a tough spell saw him dismissed after just nine games without a win. Despite the setback, Toure has stayed optimistic, attributing his resilience to the support and mentorship of Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger, two of his former managers who continue to guide him through his coaching journey.

Speaking about the advice he’s received from his former mentors, Kolo Toure said [Sky Sports via RecordSport]: “Of course, Arsène Wenger—I’m still talking to Mr. Wenger. I speak to Brendan Rodgers, of course. They tell me to try to keep fit, keep your mind busy, do a lot of gym sport, and look after your health first.”

Toure’s comments highlight the deep respect and enduring relationships he maintains with his old bosses. The 42-year-old further added: “Then keep applying for jobs. That’s the advice they give me—look after yourself, your faith, and keep applying for jobs.”

Brendan Rodgers, who made his return to Celtic last summer after a spell at Leicester City, is renowned for his exceptional man-management skills and the positive influence he has on his players. His ability to connect with individuals and foster their development has played a crucial role in creating a cohesive and motivated squad at Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers’ mentorship of Kolo Toure has evidently extended beyond their time at Celtic and Leicester. Toure, who enjoyed a stellar playing career with Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool, is eager to absorb insights from two of football management’s most respected figures. As he actively seeks the right managerial opportunity, Toure is leveraging the extensive experience and wisdom offered by his mentors, both of whom have excelled at the highest level. His resilience and dedication to self-improvement suggest that he could eventually make a successful return to management, potentially making a significant impact in the dugout.
