Regis Le Bris believes Sunderland should avoid punishment following the heated exchanges that erupted after their 2-1 victory over Luton at Kenilworth Road in the Championship. Tensions flared as Luton’s Carlton Morris and Tom Holmes, along with Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham and Luke O’Nien, received yellow cards after the final whistle.

The match saw Sunderland clinch victory thanks to Romaine Mundle’s stunning solo run and strike, which secured the win after Luton’s Elijah Adebayo had equalized, canceling out 17-year-old Chris Rigg’s opener.

Despite the post-match scenes, Le Bris was clear when asked if Sunderland should face punishment, stating, “I don’t think so.” His remarks suggest a belief that the tensions were not severe enough to warrant disciplinary action against the team.

“It’s an emotional reaction, so I don’t think we need to be punished for that sort of response. Everyone was calm a minute later, so there’s no problem,” Le Bris explained.

Sunderland were fortunate to secure all three points on a day when Luton dominated possession and play. However, Le Bris expressed pride in his team, highlighting their achievement of consecutive victories after their recent 1-0 win over Hull. With this success, they now sit three points clear at the top of the Championship table.

“They have a strong style of play, which makes it difficult to deal with the second balls,” Le Bris noted. “They played very well, and it’s tough to escape that pressure. We started well in the first five or six minutes but failed to capitalize on our opportunities to score.

“We struggled to apply pressure on their back three and conceded many corner kicks, which they excel at.

“I’m very proud of the team’s spirit and behavior throughout the game. Once again, it’s a good win.”

The defeat for the Hatters follows their impressive 3-0 derby victory over Watford on Saturday, leaving them with just 11 points from their opening 11 games as they aim for an immediate return to the Premier League. Luton boss Rob Edwards expressed his disappointment, feeling his side deserved more from their performance.

“I feel disappointed at the moment,” he stated. “Credit to Sunderland; they’ve come away from home and won the game. They’re top of the league for a reason.”

“We’re bitterly disappointed. We dominated the game from start to finish,” Edwards added, emphasizing his frustration with the result despite his team’s strong performance.
