Just three days later, Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle took center stage, delivering magic from seemingly nothing to seal another crucial win for Sunderland.
Luton boss Rob Edwards couldn’t help but praise Sunderland’s dynamic duo, Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle, after their match-winning performances. Rigg netted his third goal of the season, showing incredible composure as he weaved past Luton defenders and calmly slotted home just before the hour mark.
Minutes after Luton’s Elijah Adebayo equalized, Mundle responded with a piece of brilliance—cutting inside and curling a superb shot into the far corner, reminiscent of a classic Jack Clarke finish.
“We know we can do better in those two moments for their goals,” Edwards reflected with frustration at full-time. “Mundle’s was particularly tough to take because we’d put a lot of focus on dealing with their wide players. He cut inside far too easily, and credit to him—it was a good finish.”
“What we need to do now is sharpen up in those key moments where we were punished,” Edwards continued. “Rigg and Mundle produced a couple of outstanding individual efforts, but we can definitely do better to stop that and keep building on the good things we’re doing right now.”
Mundle repaid Regis Le Bris’ trust in style with a stunning strike at Kenilworth Road. The Sunderland boss had hinted at possibly swapping Mundle and Patrick Roberts in his pre-match press conference, following their struggles against Hull.
Instead, Le Bris chose to drop Roberts for Alan Browne while sticking with Mundle on the right. The decision paid off spectacularly when Mundle shifted the ball onto his favored right foot, effortlessly bypassing veteran Victor Moses before unleashing a brilliant finish, proving his manager’s faith was well placed.
“I feel really, really disappointed,” Edwards admitted, with Luton now a daunting 14 points behind league leaders Sunderland. “Credit to Sunderland, they’ve come away and won. They’re top of the league for a reason, and they found a way. But for us, it’s bitterly disappointing.”
Reflecting on the game, Edwards added, “I thought we dominated almost from start to finish. The first half was mostly in their territory, and our pressing made it difficult for them to find a way out. But we need to be more ruthless and clinical. Whether it’s a cross, a pass, or a decision, we’ve got to find that extra edge. We didn’t do much wrong tonight, but we’ve got to turn that dominance into goals.”
