Dennis Cirkin’s standout performances have sparked transfer interest from Leeds United, who are reportedly eager to bring him to Elland Road (Sunday Mirror, 10 November). However, Carlton Palmer told Football League World (12 November) that he can’t imagine Sunderland selling to a promotion rival. “He’s been a standout performer for Sunderland this season, which inevitably leads to transfer talk,” Palmer said. The ex-Tottenham defender joined Sunderland in 2021/22, playing 34 games in their promotion season under Alex Neil, and his form continues to shine.

Palmer was clear on Sunderland’s stance: “There’s one thing that’s not going to happen—they’re not going to sell him to Leeds United. That’s for sure.”

Palmer added, “Sunderland are top of the league, and Leeds are vying for promotion. He won’t be sold, and I’d be very, very surprised if he doesn’t commit his future to Sunderland in the coming weeks and months.”

Leeds United’s Hopes of Signing Dennis Cirkin Fade

While Dennis Cirkin would be an exceptional addition for Leeds, a transfer seems highly improbable. Sunderland, equally determined in the promotion race, would find it unthinkable to strengthen a direct rival unless a massive offer were made. Even then, Leeds may lack the financial firepower needed to tempt Sunderland into a deal that could compromise their own promotion ambitions.

Moreover, Cirkin’s impressive Championship performances make a Premier League move more likely if he ever considers leaving Sunderland. Having found stability on Wearside since joining in 2021, it would take a significant opportunity for him to depart. That said, if Leeds somehow secured a deal, it would be a massive boost for Daniel Farke’s squad as they chase their own Premier League ambitions.
