OMAHA, Nebraska — Christian Moore hit a leadoff home run, Dylan Dreiling homered for the third time in three games, and Tennessee won its first baseball national championship with a 6-5 victory over Texas A&M in Game 3 of the College World Series championships on Monday night.

The Volunteers recovered from a Game 1 loss to win two consecutive and become the first No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Tournament to win the championship since Miami in 1999.

Tennessee (60-13) limited an Aggies offense that averaged 8.5 runs per game this season to six runs over the final 20 innings of the finals, with Zander Sechrist and Nate Snead doing the heavy lifting Monday before the Aggies rallied to score four runs and get the tying run at the plate in the ninth.

Aaron Combs struck out Hayden Schott and Ted Burton to end the game, sparking a Tennessee celebration behind the pitcher’s mound. The Vols are the eighth SEC team to win a national championship in baseball. Those eight have won a total of 16 titles. The SEC has won five straight, all by different schools, and ten of the last fifteen.

Texas A&M threatened to cut the Vols’ 3-1 deficit in the sixth and seventh innings, but Snead saved the day each times. Dreiling, the CWS Most Outstanding Player, hit his 23rd home run of the season, and Hunter Ensley scored on Kavares Tears’ double to make it 6-1 heading into the eighth inning. Dreiling is the first player to have homered in all three games in the CWS best-of-three finals since 2003.The Vols’ two home runs on Monday moved them into a tie with the 1998 LSU team for the most in an NCAA Tournament (37) and gave them 184 for the season, four behind the 1997 LSU team’s NCAA record of 188.

Texas A&M caused some concern for the Vols in the eighth inning, scoring twice and threatening to score more with two runners on base and one out. Kirby Connell retired Kaeden Kent on three pitches and Ryan Targac on four. Connell pumped his left fist twice, let out a primal yell, and skipped over the third base line on his way back to the dugout.

The Aggies scored twice, with the second going home on a wild pitch, to make it a one-run game before Combs sealed the deal. Fans in Tennessee orange included football great Peyton Manning, football coach Josh Heupel, men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes, and country music artist Morgan Wallen. The temperature at first pitch was a steamy 98 degrees, with the majority of the Vols supporters sitting in the direct sun along the third-base side until the middle innings, then in the outfield bleachers until twilight. Moore took their minds off the heat, at least temporarily, when he smashed Justin Lamkin’s fourth pitch, a raised fastball, past the back wall of the left-field bullpen for his team-leading 34th home run of the season. Moore , who hit for the cycle in the Vols’ CWS opener against Florida State, batted.370 (10 for 27) in Omaha, including two home runs, two triples, and two doubles.
