The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year contract deal worth $3 million per season, the team announced on Sunday afternoon. The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel was the first to disclose the news of Liljegren’s new contract with the Maple Leafs on Sunday, right before the 5:00 p.m. ET deadline for teams to send qualified offers to their pending RFAs.Liljegren, 25, played 55 games with the Maple Leafs during the 2023-24 regular season, scoring three goals and 23 points while averaging a career-high 19:39 of ice time each night.

Liljegren’s name has surfaced in a slew of trade rumors and other stories in recent weeks, with many implying that the Maple Leafs are ready to move on from the 25-year-old Swede.Despite this, Liljegren is currently under contract with the Maple Leafs until the end of the 2025–26 season, when he will be able to become an unrestricted free agent.
