“Gabby Agbonlahor Predicts Explosive Leeds United vs. Sunderland Clash – ‘It’s Inevitable!’”

February 17, 2025

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Leeds United to secure all three points when they host Sunderland at Elland Road on Monday evening (17 February). The former Aston Villa striker believes a home win is “inevitable” given Leeds’ impressive form in the Championship, particularly at home, where they have won 12 of their last 13 games.

Leeds United’s Promotion Push

Leeds United are in a tight battle for automatic promotion and have the opportunity to reclaim the top spot in the league with at least a draw, thanks to their superior goal difference over Sheffield United. Daniel Farke’s side has been dominant at Elland Road, making their home ground a fortress, and will be eager to extend that record against Sunderland.

Speaking on talkSPORT (17 February, 7:36), Agbonlahor said:

“Leeds have won 12 of the last 13 at home, but Sunderland have won the last two away games. Tough game, but Elland Road looks like a fortress. The inevitable is a win this evening for Leeds.”

The Whites have been in sensational form in 2025, bouncing back well from their FA Cup exit to Millwall on 8 February. They have been consistent in the league and are focused on returning to the Premier League after missing out on promotion last season. Leeds reached the Championship play-off final in 2024 but lost to Southampton at Wembley, a setback that, in hindsight, may have given them more time to prepare for a stronger automatic promotion push this campaign.

Sunderland’s Challenge

While Leeds are the clear favorites, Sunderland should not be underestimated. Regis Le Bris’ side has been in good form and is pushing for a top-two finish themselves. The Black Cats are currently fourth in the Championship table and have been tough to beat, losing just once in their last 14 league matches. They have also performed well away from home, winning their last two games on the road.

Another factor that could make this match competitive is Sunderland’s strong record at Elland Road. The Black Cats have not lost at Leeds’ home ground since 2002, which could give them a psychological edge heading into the game.

Daniel Farke’s Tactical Approach

All eyes will be on Daniel Farke as he looks to guide Leeds to another crucial victory. The German head coach has already proven his ability to secure promotion from the Championship, having done so twice with Norwich City. His tactical approach will be vital in breaking down Sunderland, who have shown they can be resilient against top opposition.

Chris Wilder, the Sheffield United manager, has admitted that his team’s results will not concern Leeds, but there will be some pressure on Farke’s men to return to the top of the table. Leeds are in control of their promotion destiny and will be determined to maintain their momentum with another strong performance at home.

Predictions and Expectations

Given Leeds’ home dominance and their strong squad, Agbonlahor’s prediction of a home win seems reasonable. However, Sunderland’s recent away form and historical record at Elland Road suggest it won’t be an easy game. Many expect a close match, with a predicted 2-1 win for Leeds.

Leeds fans will be hoping their team can continue their impressive run and take another step closer to securing automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
