Celtic have secured an agreement to sign Kasper Schmeichel, sources have confirmed to Football Insider.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper has already undergone a medical examination and agreed personal terms with the club.

Insiders suggest that the deal should be concluded by the end of Saturday, as Schmeichel prepares for his new chapter in Scotland.

Described as a “huge” coup by those at Celtic Park, the signing has been significantly influenced by manager Brendan Rodgers. This move reunites Schmeichel with Rodgers, following their successful stint at Leicester City.

The Hoops have been searching for a new number one goalkeeper since Joe Hart retired at the end of last season. Schmeichel, available as a free agent after his contract with Anderlecht concluded, fits the bill perfectly.

Celtic will acquire a goalkeeper with extensive experience. Schmeichel is seen as a top-tier signing for the reigning Scottish Premiership champions due to his high-level expertise. The Danish international amassed 479 appearances for Leicester, maintaining 147 clean sheets and playing a pivotal role in their remarkable 2016 Premier League title win.

At 37, Schmeichel remains in excellent form, recently featuring in all four of Denmark’s games at the European Championships. Last season, he played 32 matches in all competitions for Anderlecht, securing eight clean sheets while the team conceded 33 goals.

Schmeichel also brings a touch of familiarity with Scottish football, having had a loan spell at Falkirk from Manchester City in 2007. During that period, he made 10 appearances and kept three clean sheets. Now, he returns to Scotland at a vastly different stage of his career, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to Celtic’s squad.
