Kyogo Furuhashi Replaces Brace-Scoring Teammate in Japan Squad as Celtic Pair Continue International Duty

After a lengthy absence from Japan’s national squad, Kyogo Furuhashi made his return for the latest international fixtures. Last week, the 29-year-old forward was named to the Japan squad but was an unused substitute in their 4-0 World Cup qualifier win over Indonesia.

In that match, his Celtic teammate Daizen Maeda played the entire second half, while Reo Hatate came off the bench late in the game. However, against China today, Kyogo was introduced in the 77th minute, replacing Koki Ogawa, who had scored twice, giving Japan a 3-1 lead.

Although Kyogo couldn’t extend Japan’s advantage, he shared the pitch with Maeda, who was subbed in for Takefusa Kubo with just six minutes remaining. Hatate remained an unused substitute for the match.

Kyogo, on the other hand, has contributed six goals and three assists in 16 appearances for Celtic so far this campaign, continuing his strong performances. However, despite his own solid stats, he’s found himself on the bench more often for Japan in favor of Ogawa, who has been in excellent form.
