Shamrock Rovers secured a victory over Irish Premiership side Larne in Thursday’s Europa Conference League clash at Windsor Park.

Shamrock Rovers convincingly defeated Irish Premiership side Larne in Thursday’s Europa Conference League match, but one of their goalscorers has been mistakenly identified. Johnny Kenny scored Rovers’ second goal in a 4-1 win at Windsor Park, heading home Graham Burke’s cross at the far post.

The Sligo native, who is in his second season on loan at Rovers from Celtic, marked the occasion with his 15th goal in all competitions this year.

After the match, Johnny Kenny was taken aback to discover he was incorrectly referred to in the official matchday programme as the son of St Patrick’s Athletic boss Stephen Kenny. Under the section titled “Three Players to Watch,” Kenny’s bio mistakenly stated, “The son of former Ireland and current St Patrick’s Athletic manager Stephen Kenny is in his second consecutive season on loan at Tallaght from Celtic.”

While Stephen Kenny does have a son who plays as a forward for a League of Ireland rival, it’s not Rovers’ star and Ireland Under-21 striker Johnny. Instead, Eoin Kenny has been making waves this season with Dundalk, the club that thrived under his father’s management before their recent relegation.

When Newstalk’s Nathan Murphy read the programme passage to him following his goalscoring performance at Windsor Park, Johnny Kenny found the mix-up humorous. He took it in stride, clearly amused by the mistaken identity, and enjoyed the lighter side of the situation despite the error.

Kenny laughed off the blunder, saying, “No, no, (it’s) obviously a mistake. My dad was here tonight, and I hope they are pretty proud back at home.” His good-natured reaction highlighted his ability to see the humor in the situation, despite the mix-up in the matchday programme.
