Ex-Leeds defender Leo Hjelde has yet to see any action in the league this season.

While Leo Hjelde had 11 opportunities last season to break into the Sunderland line-up, a managerial change has led to a frustrating season for the former Leeds United defender. The 21-year-old made the move to the Black Cats in January, and initially, it seemed like a promising decision.

Hjelde made 11 appearances in the Championship last season after debuting in February, but the arrival of new manager Regis Le Bris has stifled his chances this season. As a result, he has yet to play a single minute in league action, with his only outing coming in the Carabao Cup.

Sunderland’s defensive lineup now features Luke O’Nien, Dan Ballard, Aji Alese, and Chris Mepham as their center-back options, leaving Leo Hjelde positioned behind all four in the pecking order. Additionally, his chances of securing a spot at left-back are also blocked.

While a consistent run in the side seems unlikely for the time being, Hjelde has caught the attention of his manager with his positive attitude. Regis Le Bris has assured him that he still has a role to play, stating, “He’s very close to the team, and he will have opportunities for sure.”

“He’s a good player with a strong mentality, and he remains very connected with the team. We need players like him. While he may not be involved at the moment, he is very close to the squad, and I’m confident he will get an opportunity to play.”
