July 14, 2024

Celtic FC Women have announced that Hana Kerner has signed a new contract, keeping her with the Hoops until 2025.

Kerner joined from Pitea IF Women in January 2023 and made an immediate impact with 11 league appearances before an ACL injury sidelined her for the entire last season. Despite this setback, she dedicated herself to recovery throughout the 23/24 season.

The American defender is now back in pre-season training, with head coach Elena Sadiku giving her the opportunity to re-establish herself in the squad. “Hana’s resilience and dedication during her recovery have been remarkable,” a source close to the club noted.

This approach mirrors the club’s support for Lucy Ashworth Clifford, who also suffered an ACL injury. Like Kerner, Clifford was given an additional year on her contract and made a successful return, contributing to Celtic’s historic SWPL1 title win. “Lucy’s comeback was inspirational, and we expect Hana to make a similar impact this season,” Sadiku commented.

In other news, Celtic Women have been drawn away to Montrose in the second round of the Sky Sports Cup, with the match scheduled for 29 September.

Before that, the team will compete in the Champions League, facing Finland’s KuPS Kuopio in the first round on 4 September. FC Gintra will host the games in Lithuania, adding to the excitement of the upcoming season.

Celtic’s proactive management in extending contracts and providing support during injury recoveries reflects their commitment to building a resilient and competitive squad. As the new season approaches, both Kerner and Clifford’s returns are eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike.

With Champions League fixtures on the horizon and key players making their comebacks, the Ghirls are poised for a season filled with potential and promise.
