While on loan from Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old left-back was a part of the Borussia Dortmund team that lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley earlier this month.

He was called into the squad to replace the injured Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, and is currently playing for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 in Germany.

After forward Lewis Dobbin joined from Everton during the preseason transfer window, Maatsen is the second player that Villa manager Unai Emery signed.

After placing fourth in the Premier League the previous season, Villa is now getting ready for Champions League football.

Maatsen played for Dortmund in 16 league games and seven Champions League games. He scored in the German team’s victory over Atletico Madrid in the European quarterfinals.
