October 22, 2024

Riverstown’s Johnny Kenny has been named to the PFAI Team of the Year for 2024, an honor voted for by his fellow players.

The 21-year-old striker, on loan at Shamrock Rovers from Celtic, has had an outstanding season, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances, along with two crucial strikes in European competition.

Kenny, a former Sligo Rovers player, has also been a standout performer for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s throughout the year. As the League of Ireland season draws to a close, his future remains uncertain as he prepares to return to Celtic.

Notably, Sligo Rovers’ Ellis Chapman missed out on selection for the team of the year.

Chapman, with an impressive nine goals from midfield, has been one of Sligo Rovers’ standout performers this season.

Speaking after Saturday evening’s match, Sligo Rovers manager John Russell expressed his hopes that Chapman would receive recognition for his stellar form with a spot in the PFAI Team of the Year.

“He’s probably been one of the players of the season in terms of the league,” Russell said. “I’m hoping he will get in that team of the year as a reward for all the goals, assists, and performances he’s delivered. We definitely missed him tonight, no doubt.”
