Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is chasing a dream to help guide Wales to the 2026 World Cup, just weeks after making his international debut. His appearance against Montenegro last month made him Wales’ oldest debutant since World War II, coming just a month before his 34th birthday. Now, Darlow is hoping to turn his late start into a heroic World Cup journey.

Leeds United’s number two, Karl Darlow, had previously declined chances to join the Wales squad, but the grandson of 1958 World Cup squad member Ken Leek is now determined to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. After being handed his debut by new Wales manager Craig Bellamy, Darlow is eager to make his mark and help lead his nation to the 2026 World Cup.

Karl Darlow explained to *The Independent*: “At different times in my career, I’ve had various commitments in terms of getting game time. There were moments when I didn’t feel it was the right time to come. Now, I’m so motivated and determined to help this Welsh squad qualify for the World Cup.

“I had a fantastic Zoom meeting with the manager. Everything he said ticked all my boxes, and he was pleased with how I came across as well. It’s a new era, and the main goal for me and the squad is to get to the World Cup.”

“I probably thought this door was closed, but I’m delighted the manager wanted me here,” Darlow shared. “We connected at the right time, and we have similar ambitions.

“There’s a World Cup I’d be desperate to be part of, and if I can help in that journey, it’s something I’ll look back on in my career with pride. I was so proud to be out there wearing the shirt and to get a win on top of it. I’m just so thankful to everyone for allowing me this opportunity.”

“My family is beyond proud. My mum, dad, and nan came down to the Türkiye game and absolutely loved it,” Darlow said. “My nan Janet was thrilled to be back in Cardiff and enjoy the game. It’s a special moment for them. I know all about my grandad’s career, and it’s something for the family and myself to be proud of.”

Wales face Iceland and Montenegro during the current international break, with Darlow’s side sitting second in their Nations League group behind Türkiye.
